Devon has a rich diversity of habitats housing
an impressive variety of bird species. It's home to Cirl Buntings,
one of the rarest farmland birds of the UK and the fastest bird on
earth, the Peregrine Falcon breeds within its capital city.
Dartmoor's high expanses are sanctuary to upland specialists, Golden
Plover and Dunlin, while lowland heathland in the east supports Nightjars
and Dartford Warblers and the oak woodlands around Dartmoor and Exmoor
are areas where Pied Flycatchers and Redstarts can be found.
Thousands of migrating wildfowl winter on Devon's sheltered estuaries
and breeding seabirds, including hundreds of Auks throng the coastal
Atlantic cliffs. The nearby Exe and Axe estuaries offer an amazing
variety of birdlife and we would recommend a boat cruise as the best
way of viewing the wide range of species. The hotel staff will happily
arrange a cruise with a local boat operator, but please book early
to avoid disappointment. |
