Bedford Hotel’s top 5 BEaches in devon
DIscover our favourite beaches to visit in devon this summerAs we enter into the summer months, we wanted to share some of our favourite beaches to explore on the East Coast of Devon…
Our favourite Devon beaches to explore this summer
Beach #1: Sidmouth Beach
We may be a bit biassed, but Sidmouth Beach is definitely one of the best beaches in Devon! A stone’s throw away from the hotel, Sidmouth Beach is made up of hand sized pebbles above the shore line and when the tide is low, deep red sand and beautiful rock pools appear; perfect for families to explore!
Known as one of the main gateways to the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, and right on the South West Coast Past, the iconic red cliffs present the most breathtaking walks and sea views.
There is a slipway at the eastern end of the beach and at the western end, there are kayaks and canoes available for hire. Dogs are welcome across the whole of the beach from 1st October to the 30th April, and on a small section of the eastern end from 1st May to 30th September.
Beach #2: Exmouth Beach
Well known for its two miles of golden sand, fascinating rock pools, and lengthy promenade that is full of classic attractions including Swing Boats and Crazy Golf; Exmouth Beach is a fun day out for all ages,
With kite surfing, windsurfing, kayaking and paddle boarding, it’s perfect for water sport enthusiasts with options for everyone to enjoy.
Another gem of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, and right on the South West Coast Past, the cliffs around the beach offer beautiful walks with incredible coast views.
Dogs are welcome across the whole of the beach from 1st October to the 30th April, and on a small section at either end of the beach from 1st May to 30th September.
Beach #3: Beer Beach
Beer Beach is situated in the beautiful picturesque fishing village of Beer. The shingle shoreline is surrounded by limestone cliffs, creating a quaint little cove that is often protected from strong winds.
Fishing is a huge part of the local community and economy. You can’t beat sitting back and watching the colourful array of fishing boats (that are specially designed to be launched from the beach) come back in the late afternoon to unload fresh catches of fish, lobster and crab. If you want to try it for yourself, there are plenty of fishing trips available to go on too!
It’s also a popular place for coastal walks; with a ramble from Branscombe to Seaton, along the South West Coast Path, rated as one of the best.
Dogs are welcome to the beach from 1st October to the 30th April, but unfortunately not during the busy summer months.
Beach #4: Branscombe Beach
Branscombe Beach is a long shingle beach with stunning coastal scenery. It is set just below the village of Branscombe, and is part of the Jurassic Coastline. It has good connections to the South West Coast Path and is part of the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
The beach has a plethora of beautiful rock pools and the calm sea makes it the perfect place for skimming stones in the early evening sun. There is also an area for dog exercise all year round.
When you are visiting, make sure that you pay a visit to Branscombe Village too. The quaint thatched cottages line the windy roads of the cliff valley all the way to the sea. It is claimed to be one of the country’s longest villages, and most beautiful and scenic locations on the South Coast to explore.
Beach #5: Budleigh Salterton Beach
This expansive pebble beach spreads for two and a half miles along the stunning Jurassic Coast and with beautiful clear water. It is the perfect place for a refreshing dip.
There are plenty of beachside cafes for a spot of lunch, along with beach huts that are available for hire by the day or week – simply contact the TIC (Tourist Information Centre) for more information.
For those that love a bit more adventure, it is also a great spot for paddleboarding and kayaking. Budleigh Paddle Sports offer guided tours, or you can hire equipment and explore the wonderful waters yourself.
Dogs are welcome across the whole of the beach from 1st October to the 30th April, and on a small section at either end of the beach from 1st May to 30th September.
